Vanilla comes from the Totonaca region in Veracruz, Mexico. The original name was Xahanat, which was hard for the Spanish to pronounce so they called it vainilla, and has been translated to all the languages.
For centuries the finest gourmet vanilla is harvested and produced in Mexico using traditional methods and an elaborate process purely manual. This explains why it is the second most expensive spice in the world, only after saffron.

Where could you use vanilla beans?
One vanilla bean is equal to three teaspoons of vanilla extract.
Vanilla is a delicious flavour loved by most people, you could use it to give flavour: to ice cream, shakes, smoothies, cakes, biscuits, all sort of sweets and desserts, beverages, liquors. If you bake chocolate treats, vanilla will help to enhance the chocolately flavour to cakes, filled chocolates, cookies, jellies and all kind of chocolate treats.
How to use it:
Put the bean on a flat surface. With a sharp knife delicately make a cut all along it and then open it, like unfolding it. Scrap all the little seeds and pulp and simply add to your dessert mixture.
*Tip: The whole bean could be added to recipes that require boiling or hot milk / water, just remember to remove it when you are about to bake the dessert.
